 I have quite the same problem.
 I can write Japaneses characters in pidgin and the person I'm talking with
 can see properly what I wrote.
 But I can't see what the person wrote if it's Japanese.
 If I copy/paste what the person wrote in OOoWriter or anywhere else I can
 see the correct characters, but not in pidgin, whatever the font I set is.
