 I don't see the option to set smileys per protocol.

 Yes, i.e. to have chat windows be tabbed while IM windows remain separate,
 for example.  Right now there is an option for "Show IMs and chats in
 tabbed windows" so it would be as easy as having two separate options
 ("Show IMs in tabbed..." and "Show chats in tabbed...") and keeping track
 of them separately.  I do see that I can drag one chat window into another
 and it automatically becomes a tab, so that's good.
