Comment:

 This is probably because you have set your default gateway on the remote
 network and pidgin is routing traffic through your work network.  The
 native MSN client will automatically fall back to using a restricted
 network mode, but pidgin doesn't do this automatically.

 Your best bet is to change your vpn connection settings not to route all
 traffic through the remote network; if that isn't possible set your MSN
 account in pidgin to use the "HTTP Method" via the checkbox in your
 account settings.
