 For the record, the timeout-after-close portion of this ticket is
 addressed by the persistent conversation stuff Sadrul has implemented.
 This '''should''' be present in the next release, barring the need to make
 another emergency bugfix release.

 After some discussion in the XMPP conference and IRC channel, there is
 some agreement that inactivity-based timeouts for log closure isn't a good
 idea.  I'm not sure this has been entirely shot down, though.
