 I'm not convinced that it really has "anything to do with the msn code",
 at least in relation to Jabber as far as one working and one not. There is
 something definitely screwy with the login.live.com server and I'm
 thinking that it's "breaking" these SSL libraries by doing a very very
 uncommon thing (disconnecting without sending a close signal or something
 to that effect).

 I went searching to see if I could find more information about Adium's
 CDSA SSL plugin and possibly something about that error, but I can't for
 the life of me find any API on those SSL functions nor anything about
 those error codes.

 My opinion at this point is to do something to the CDSA plugin, perhaps
 return this error as an EAGAIN, but I'm not sure that's the "right way"
 about going about this. With GNU TLS, capturing the equivalent error in
 the plugin's read function and returning an EAGAIN instead worked, albeit
 as a work around. I'd be curious to see if the same thing fixes the CDSA
 plugin, but I have no Mac to try it with.
