 I think that the problem is in the DNS query: when behind a proxy, a DNS
 query should not be done at all.
 Curiously, there is a similar problem in the update of Eclipse :-O and it
 can be resolved by hard coding the IP address of the addresses to be
 resolved in /etc/hosts file (I did not try it in Pidgin yet).
