Comment:

 This is not a bug in pidgin this is a font issue. The font you or your
 GTK+ theme has chosen for the conversation window history area does not
 contain the characters necessary to display the message. Did you install
 the new GTK+ version that came with 2.4.0/2.4.1? Or are you using the
 older GTK+ version that came with 2.3.1?
