It depends what sort of network problem is causing the inability to
connect. If it is DNS problem, the change the IP would be an easy
solution.
It does make sense that the native clients can connect, but pidgin can't;
in many cases, the native clients contain one or more fallback mechanisms
where they try different ports or even different protocols to communicate
with the server in restricted network scenarios.
