Comment (by ccb):
I think the major disconnect is *cultural*. This has been a screamfest
where both sides are talking past each other. I don't understand the
developer side of the argument at all. The complainers are on about this:
1. a heavily used feature was removed
2. the removal of the feature violates 'the principle of least
astonishment' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Principle_of_least_astonishment
3. most "old school" UNIX people HATE HATE HATE MDI. MDI belongs in
windows. Some applications make sense as MDI but MDI haters can only cope
if all of the subwindows are highly configurable.
I tried to provide usable input:
1. I said that I cannot compose outgoing messages in a two-line text input
window. At my usual resolution I can barely see it let alone type there.
2. I said that I often have cause to compose largish messages
3. I've had an X workstation on my desk for 23 years. I've been at it for
10 hours a day every day. I've lived through UWM and Motif. If a program
has multiple text panes, the X-windows programs ALWAYS make them
resizable. If a program has multiple toolbars and menus, X-windows
programs SHOULD make them detachable and reorderable.
The core issue is the cultural one. Once one establishes a work flow for
X windows and uses it for a quarter century your expectations for how
applications are going to behave sink in pretty deep. If the evolution
developers were to decide by FIAT that the splitter pane between messages-
list and message-content would be fixed at 4 messages in messages-list an
identical firestorm would ensue.
