 I just tried three experiments:

 1) Change the IP address of the laptop with the laptop up and running
 (plug it into a different network).  Result: pidgin stayed up and
 reconnected correctly.

 2) Suspend and resume the laptop, keeping the same IP address (my DHCP
 server at home assigns fixed IP addresses).  Result: pidgin stayed up and
 reconnected correctly.  I resumed the laptop immediately when it powered
 down.

 3) Suspend and resume the laptop, with a different address upon resume
 (different network).  Result: pidgin crashed.

 So it appears to be something about the combination of suspend/resume and
 crash that triggers this.
