 That "error" is fine, it means the server saw our ping request and doesn't
 know how to correctly handle it, but given that it is a ping all we care
 about is that we got a response not what the response was. Also no, what
 is directly before the disconnection does not necessarily have anything to
 do with the disconnection. If you yank your ethernet cable the last sent
 stanza will have nothing to do with the fact that your connection just
 went dead (for example). It is entirely possible to lose connection to one
 location without losing connection to others. Did you have other Google
 Talk connections that stayed alive when this one died?.
