Comment (by msoltyspl):

As for "we can't have auto-resizing and manual control" at the same time -
how can you even think that forcing *any* type of automation is better
than leaving it under manual control ? Have you been using microsoft
 products too much ?

 - having manual control is useful and natural thing to have. Especially
for unix-minded people. And this particular feature (should it even be
called as a feature ?) has been in gaim for ages.

 - forcing auto-sized typing area (or for that matter, forcing anything
that could be set manually) is not a progress. It's a regression.

'''Why did you even bother wasting time to implement it ?'''

To make a blunt and ugly example: Do you consider office 2007 a progress ?

It actually reminds me about the change you forced from 1.5.x versions,
where user's avatar was nicely placed to the left of the typing space (and
could be turned off for those that didn't want it). It was excellent and
far better than what you have now (and probably simpler in code,
considering functionality of that tiny, pointless top-right thingy)

I can live without that (I don't understand the point of current
implementation), but removing manual control in favor of automatizm is
 just crazy.

You're not making any progress in UI department with things like that. Of
course it's my opinion, but looking at this wall of comments, I guess many
 people would agree.
