 Since installing 2.4.1 my Windows XPsystem tray icon doesn't change state
 when I change Pidgin status. I can force an update by turning the system
 tray icon off and on.

 I re-installed 2.4.0 and the problem went away.  I searched for tickets
 against 2.4.1 but I don't have a lot of experience doing this.
