 theme to see if that is related.  Sometimes weird Windows themes or
 desktop hacks (e.g. WindowBlinds) cause problems with GTK+.

 Weird as it sounds, I think I tracked it down. It was NOT software. The
 fan on my video card appeared to be stuck! How's that for strange? Anyway,
 When I fixed that, Pidgin started working. I'm guessing that it would
 overheat, and when enough graphics commands hit it, it shut things down.
