 well ok, the problems seems to have disappeared for me. after half a day
 of not being able to connect at all i stopped trying pidgin and decided to
 try the gtalk client to check if it was a gtalk problem.  30 minutes later
 (i had to download and install the client on the same computer as pidgin
 among other things), i connected via the gtalk client and it was fine.  i
 tried pidgin again, and it was fine.  and so far, no disconnections on
 both accounts.

 this is far fetched but it may be possible that google is blacklisting ips
 that don't log on using the gtalk client.  either that or it was an issue
 that solved itself.  i'll post again if it recurs tomorrow.
