 Why not just do Buddies -> Sort Buddies -> By status?

 because say you have 2 buddy groups each containing 50 people
 in both of those groups say only 4 people are online and the other 96
 people are away/idle

 given this example you would need to scroll up and down in order to view
 the 4 people that can talk.

 Sorting by status only really is a solution to the problem if you only use
 one buddy group in your buddy list.
