 Ok sorry, it just came to my mind that I recently installed the OTR plugin
 and it seems that since then the characters are send or received broken.
 Just did some quick tests: With completely disabled OTR it seems to work
 finde so it really seems like I've found the one who's guilty and you can
 stop searching for bugs that aren't bugs. :) If you think I'm right,
 please close this ticket.
