 kalin is describing a different problem than you are -- he is using Linux,
 where the various character conversion mechanisms work.  You are using
 Windows, where there are specific versions of the glib/gtk libraries which
 cause conversion problems.  If you are using Windows, and Pidgin 2.4.0 or
 2.4.1, there is indeed a conversion problem which can be fixed by
 downgrading Gtk+.  This is not what we are talking about.
