For privacy and security reasons, pidgin-encryption should be enabled by
default.
Pidgin's popularity can be traced to the fact that it sets itself apart
from other clients in terms of features and usability. By including
pidgin-encryption, Pidgin will also set itself apart from other clients in
terms of security.
Years ago when I was using AIM, I had always wanted to enable encryption,
but did not know how. Even if I could have enabled it, no one else would
have been using it and thus it would have been practically useless. If, at
that time, there were a client that used encryption by default, I
absolutely would have switched to it.
