 I updated and compiled my webpidgin plugin and attached it to this ticket.
 The newest version will always be at http://data.thirdmartini.com/Pidgin/
 .  I don't have any clue to how one would integrate this into a Vista
 dashboard widget.  ( I don't even have a copy of Vista )  so if anyone is
 willing to do the dashboard work I'll gladly help out if changes are
 needed in the webpidgin plugin.
