 It is not exactly the case that having duplicate accounts of this sort
 never worked, it just never worked very well and was always prone to
 problems (problems that could very well not have been seen or hit by any
 given person, but problems that existed nonetheless). It is incredibly
 unfortunate that this is not currently possible in pidgin and it is
 something I would like to change (only for resources not for Connect
 Server) but the ramifications and invasiveness of the changes required
 isn't something I've sat down to examine (nor do I look forward to needing
 to do so).

 If you use the IP address as the Domain and the real domain as the Connect
 Server, that may work with 2.4.1 (will likely not work with any earlier
 version).
