 I am seeing this as well, connecting to openfire.  It appears the ping
 request is sent, and the server sends a response immediately saying
 feature is not implemented.

 Then, pidgin timeouts after a bit, and the reconnect occurs.

 It seems like pidgin should ping, and if it gets any kind of response
 including the feature not implemented, it should be ok.
