Comment (by deryni):
Yes, UI items have behaviours people are used to. Those behaviours can be
extended when necessary. Which is why we have made the effort to have as
much of the window as possible be a click target for the input area. As I
indicated this is a change which needs to be taught to people and ways to
make this more obvious are welcome.
1) We aren't hijacking anything, all of your examples continue to work in
the history area, try them (we have attempted to make sure not to break
any usage of it that we are aware of). Limiting ourselves to an accepted
standard when we can do better isn't something we are keen on doing. (For
the record I see nothing here that could be a "pain point" and really
nothing even that I can see you requesting we change or do differently.)
2) The toolbar icons are 16 pixels tall, unless your font is less than 8
pixels tall the toolbar should be approximately 75% of the size of the
input area itself. Even less at larger font sizes. The formatting toolbar
is only that intense when you have it expanded, the default is unexpanded.
Try that and see how it feels. I find it amusing that you suggest we run
an eye-tracking experiment and then assume you know what the results will
be, the entire purpose of experiments is to find that sort of thing out.
We would be more than happy to have someone run such experiments for us
and enlighten us with the results. Also, there is a reason we let people
turn the formatting toolbar off, if you don't want it don't look at it.
Almost everything on it has a default key binding anyway.
3) I agree that adding padding will add less space than adding the third
line, I disagree that adding the padding will materially affect either the
visual or manual difficulty/ease in locating or selecting the area (again
a real study here would be amazingly useful). Other ideas for ways to
improve this are always welcome.
What environmental behaviours do you think we are violating or differing
from here exactly? We do have logical rationales for our beliefs, we have
evidence that people have reasons for liking the change, we are largely
lacking evidence for why people do not like the inability to resize the
area (which is something I've futilely requested in every formulation I
could think of), and while we are lacking hard data to substantiate our
claims so (at least so far) are you.
