 I think I'm going to go upload a package of this for my distro.  (Arch)

 And given the various parties' stances here, perhaps this might wind up
 being the best compromise for now:  if the devs don't want to add back the
 feature, install this plugin and you can get it back.  Problem solved ...
 enough.  :-)
