 By "oder", did you mean "or"?

 There are no special characters in the group name, the buddy name, or the
 buddy alias.  They look something like this:

 Buddy name: "stringofletters"

 Alias: "Real Name (Abbreviation)"

 Group name: "Stringofletters"

 I also tried to do it using an alias like "Stringofletters", without using
 parentheses.  I also tried to add the buddy without using an alias.  At
 first, none of these attempts worked, until suddenly I saw all of my
 attempts to add the buddy existing in the same group (as I explained
 above)

 However, I do not think they were added properly, because they were all
 existing in the same group, and typically Pidgin does not allow the user
 to add multiple instances of a buddy to the same group: usually, the
 extraneous one disappears leaving only one instance in the group. The fact
 that suddenly there were many instances of them is why I think there is
 still something wrong.
