Comment:

 This isn't something that pidgin itself has any control over; all font
 handling is done by GTK+/Pango.  The problem with the Symbol font is that
 it doesn't actually contain correct glyph mappings ([GnomeBug:149643 see
 upstream report]), so there isn't a whole lot that can be done with it.
