Comment (by chemistrydioxide):

United Internet (1&1, GMX, Web.de) has an XMPP/Jabber server. You can use
it with any e-mail address that is hosted on their mail server, including
those ones that belong to your own domain, but excluding e-mail accounts
that are hosted on a dedicated 1&1 server.

In order to use their XMPP/Jabber server with Pidgin, you need to use the
 following account settings:

 '''basic tab'''[[BR]]
 protocol: XMPP (=Jabber)[[BR]]
user name: the part of your e-mail address that is before the @
 sign[[BR]]
domain: the part of your e-mail address that is after the @
 sign[[BR]]
ressource: the ressource identifier is used to distinguish several
clients that are connected to the same account at the same time. You don't
 have to change it.[[BR]]
password: The password that you are using for e-mail[[BR]]
 local alias: your own name[[BR]]
 '''advanced tab'''[[BR]]
United Internet (GMX, Web.de, 1&1) does not require any changes in the
 advanced tab.[[BR]]

 '''gateways'''[[BR]]
UI's XMPP server has some server-side gateways to other protocols as well.
You can't set them up using Pidgin because Pidgin speaks these protocols
itself, but you can use these gateways with Pidgin once they are set up
 from another client.
