 Eurika!  I really do think the wallpaper is the source of the problem.
 Every
 time I hit "next" on the wallpaper, pidgin adds anout 5 or 10 megabytes.
 http://www.wallpaperchanger.de/, though I bet the particular program
 doesn't
 matter.
