 Thanks for trying to help. Sorry I didn't respond to yr first request for
 a debug log file.

 Here's how I solved the problem.

 With Bonjour uninstalled:
 Uninstall Pidgin, Uninstall GTK+
 Remove all references to Pidgin and GTK in the registry.
 (Several remain)
 Boot to Safe Mode.
 Install Pidin 2.02 and its GTK.
 Try running Pidgin- no error msg.
 Boot normally
 Try running Pidgin- no error msg.
 Over-install Pidgin 2.14 without its GTK
 Try running Pidgin- no error msg.
 Over-install GTK+ 2.12 - so Chinese characters are displayed in QQ.
 Try running Pidgin- no error msg.

 It now works.

 It looks like there's some problem, as I suggested, in overwriting or
 updating some reg entry.

 BTW I did try GTK in different locations, including its default on C: - it
 still failed.

 I sincerely hopes this helps someone- I've long lost count of how many
 times I've installed this and uninstalled it!
