 (I know this is slightly abusing the ticket scope, but it may ease the
 burden for users affected by the won't-fix status)

 OK, a week after trying the new pidgin release I gave up and switched to
 Carrier/FunPidgin as recommended by another poster in this ticket.
 Carrier patched Pidgin to make the text entry re-sizable again. As a
 pleasant surprise it also includes patches to make other, recent UI
 changes optional. For example, typing notification can be switched back to
 an icon instead of being inside the chat text area.
