 In chasing this, I came across an interesting revelation.  An incorrectly
 typed password is producing the exact 'read error' above.  It never
 prompts for the password again, just immediately gives the read error on
 connect.  I don't know if wrong passwords are the sole source of the read
 error (making the different interfaces thing a red herring), but it's
 definitely a bug when connecting to jabber here.  The only solution in
 these cases is to completely close out of the client and restart it.
