 Imagine the following situation:

 Some people have written to you. You'd like to open the windows one after
 another, fast, to answer them. You press [insert shortcut button here] and
 the first window opens. You type something, send it, and press escape. You
 press [insert shortcut button here] again and the next window appears, and
 so on.

 You do so instead of moving them mouse and clicking on the blinking Pidgin
 icon to open the windows.

 This would be extremely useful to people who like to do things quickly.
