Comment:

 The New IM dialog and double-clicking use the same functions in pidgin to
 cause the creation of a conversation window, which leads me to believe
 that any difference in the outcome has to be the result of your wm/de and
 not something pidgin is doing. As I mentioned before I'm going to bet that
 this is the focus stealing prevention interpreting clicking and submitting
 a dialog as different things for its detection of 'user is using the
 application'. Does it matter if you click the Ok button or if you hit the
 'Enter' key?
