New description:

 Current support for using Gnome environmental proxy settings only extends
 to HTTP proxies.  This patch (diff against 2.5.0) adds support for a SOCKS
 proxy the user may have defined in the Gnome settings.  If both a HTTP and
 SOCKS proxy are specified, the HTTP proxy is preferred.

 This addresses an issue I commented on in
 [http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/1614 this ticket], but only fixes the
 behavior in Gnome, not Windows.
