 What about the following proposals?

 1. A yellow ball with a green/red arrow pointing up/down (i feel like
 up/down fits better than left/right for in/out concept, if the door is
 excluded)
 2 A top-half green/red (status color), bottom-half
 yellow/white/transparent ball (like pókeball) or viceversa.

 And maybe for a future, how about replace balls for eggs instead? maybe
 better for the pidgeon!
