Comment:

 Well, I tried re-registering Firefox by switching the the default to IE.
 However, now, even with the default having been reset to Firefox, clicking
 on URLs in Pidgin leads to an error saying that iertutil.dll cannot be
 found and thus the link cannot be opened. It's all very strange.
