 couple of things

 1) this is not a firewall issue
 2) i am now using an alternate msn plugin (WLM) and it works fine

 this means, the msn plugin is having an issue -could be blocked accounts
 or other non-std settings for contacts (the msn plugin doesnt know how to
 handle)

 just my 2 cents

 the WLM account manager for msn is definately superior to the one that
 ships with pidgin
