 I think the suggestion here was to do the sort of thing we do in the
 conversation window history, that is assume that all non-activation key
 presses are intended to be typed into the relevant field and move the
 focus there automatically. In this case it would mean anything that is not
 the spacebar (or down arrow? or what-have-you) would be interpreted as
 'the user has started typing the username' and as such we would move the
 focus automatically.

 If that was not the explicit suggestion then that is at least how I read
 it and how I would suggest we implement it.
