 Oh wow, I forgot this ticket was still open.

 I isolated it to a problem with AIM, I believe. As soon as one of the
 people I was testing with upgraded her system to a newer version of AIM
 (embedded with AOL internet service, not the separate AOL Instant
 Messanger download) after a full computer upgrade (went from XP to Vista),
 the problem disappeared. This leads me to believe that the AIM client was
 doing something funky that either was transmitted properly, or could not
 be interpreted and displayed properly by Pidgin.

 So to answer your question, no. I've been unable to reproduce this issue
 for several months now.
