 In Linux, Pidgin never seems to report idle times. I am using Ubuntu's
 pidgin package, but have also tried several versions from getdeb.net.

 The work around (which must be done every time you go idle) is to go into
 Preferences -> Status/Idle tab -> and change the way it reports idle to
 something else, then back to the option you want. Then suddenly it will go
 idle (if using "from last sent message")
