 More just now.  Same as before; I Alt-Tab'ed away from Pidgin, did a bunch
 of work in various apps, then Alt-Tab'ed back to Pidgin's chat window,
 whose main area was black.  Just for completeness of information, I had
 two tabs open in that window at the time, one for IRC, the other for
 Google Talk.  I dismissed the window via the X button on the title bar and
 was able to start up again the chats I had just left.

 Not too many minutes later, Pidgin crashed (complete with Windows' dialog
 offering to report the error to Microsoft; I declined) right after I
 copied a series of about 10 Gtk error messages from its Debug window.
 There were new ones that looked like they detailed the Gtk function call
 that was throwing the error.  Unfortunately, because of the crash, my
 clipboard does not contain these error messages to paste here....
