I want to applaud you for finding the minimize new windows preference
yourself, you have no idea how many people ask us for it because they
didn't look. The preference you want however is on the Interface page and
is called "Hide new IM conversations".
To turn off buddy icons (and other extended buddy data) the
Buddies->Show->Buddy Details menu item is what is wanted. No, you can't
turn off just the buddy icons.
