Comment:

 Yes, I agree that is what pidgin is doing.  I believe it is incorrect
 behavior though.

 When you first start pidgin the tray icon shows the "connecting" icon.
 This seems correct.  However, if a connection is not made, I believe it
 should remain with the "connecting" icon until a valid login is made.
 This is similar to the AOL AIM client.  The tray icon is a yellow man when
 logged out and the blue background appears once login is successful.

 The buddy list allows you to set what status you want to be once login is
 successful and shows the correct current status.  Usually "Available -
 Connecting" until a successful login or network timeout.  The tray icon
 should show the "connecting" icon during this period.
