New description:

 I'm having a hard time producing any data for this, but here are the steps
 to reproduce on my system

 1. $ pidgin
 2. Machine goes into hard lack (can't get to virtual terminals, can't ssh
 in & not viewable on the network, screen image is locked)

 I would love some help to diagnosis this, I'm quite lost on how to better
 describe the problem. Thanks so much for any triaging help anyone can
 provide.

 Edit:

 After a bit of further diagnosis, I've removed the ~/.purple config
 directory. So far, I've been able to reproduce the hard lack when adding a
 bonjour account, and also once when adding a profile picture to a bonjour
 account.
