New description:

 Using pidgin 2.5.2 (compiled from source) on Kubuntu 8.04, kernel 2.6.24

 Steps to reproduce:

 1) Start up pidgin. Mine automatically starts offline.
 2) Go to preferences, smiley themes.
 3) Mine starts on "default". Click on "none", click back on "default".
 4) Pidgin crashes.

 Backtrace attached.

 (Go easy on me, it's my first ever bug report).

 I'm sure it's not because of a plug-in as I did moved prefs.xml away and
 it was still reproducible.
