OMG! I think this is a BIG mistake...
By thinking about all this twice, I now think the real problem is
something completely else... it's a usability issue!
To explain this: I added a "logon notify" to a buddy. Later I wanted to
deactovate this... How did I want to do this? I opened the SAME context
menu again and unchecked the option "logon" and hit "Speichern" (in
english: "Save"). So...
- What I THOUGHT I did: Uncheck the selected logon-alarm.
- What I REALLY did (at least i NOW think that's it): Add another alarm
for no specified event (all checkboxes unchecked).
Why did that happen and how to fix it?
I don't know the english client, but the german client states "Speichern"
which means "Save" (perhaps the english one also says "Save"). So I
EXPECTED the client to save CHANGES to alarms. But what the client
actually DOES, is "Add" or "Hinzufügen" in german. If I had read the
right-click-context-menu carefully, I would have read "ADD buddy-
alarm...", but I didn't and/or I thought this is just a translation error.
I didn't expect "add" and "delete" on different places.
In order to give users a chance to notice this mistake BEFORE adding
another alarm, I propose to change the button-text to "Add" or
"Hinzufügen" or the correct translations in all other languages. If the
user comes to the button, he has a second chance to notice, that "Add" is
NOT what he wants to do.
The even better solution could be to take all functionality of buddy
alarms in one place. But thats much more expensive...
