Comment:

 I'm assuming when you say it isn't working you mean that even if you try
 to 'Preview' the sounds from the preferences dialog you cannot hear them,
 correct?

 Does aplay work if you run it from a shell yourself?

 Does aplay work if you try to play the pidgin sounds manually?
