Comment:

 We used to have a preferences for this (or maybe it was a plugin I forget)
 and received no end of bug reports from people who had forgotten they had
 turned it on (or loaded it) and could not figure out why their windows
 kept disappearing. We removed the option (or the plugin) because of that.
 A plugin could be written which does the same thing now if someone wanted
 to do that. Such a plugin would potentially interact badly with tabbed
 windows though, so unless you don't use them it may be more annoying then
 it is helpful.

 This request is best implemented as a plugin. Currently we as Pidgin
 developers are not interested in implementing it. This ticket remains open
 as an invitation for someone to write a plugin fulfilling the request.
