 There's plenty to be confused about here - while the patch looks like it
 is probably the right thing to do, we still have no explanation for why
 2.5.3 is causing problems as there have been no changes in anything
 remotely related to the code in question.

 The other part that is confusing is that I can't recreate this at all.
