 I suggest you to apply the patches and recompile your version if you
 already have set up the environment.
 Also, according to MSNP13, REG is the command used to rename a group.
 But the simplest way you'll find to rename your group correctly is using
 another pidgin version (if this bug is a regression), or even another
 client.
